Afghani Barakzai works for CADG in Kabul. She's a star employee and has been working for CADG for about a year. She is responsible for many administrative functions and has the responsibility of everything from buying paper for the office to making sure people are picked up and dropped off at the airport.
She is also one of the early adapters of a pilot program called Mobile Money, developed by Roshan mobile through an e-banking system called M-Paisa. Essentially, it allows the employees to receive their salaries through an e-banking system through their mobile phones. The system is made secure through the use of passwords and other technology so that if Afghani loses her phone, she will not lose her money. Adopting the system has its advantages. One of which is it reduces the amount of cash our employees have to carry around in insecure places such as Kabul and Kandahar, and gives a woman like Afghani more power over where and when she withdraws her salary. This gives her the advantage of transferring her salary to her family members living in other parts of Afghanistan safely and efficiently.
We're not sure of the overall acceptance of the system yet. Like all new technologies, especially in a war-torn nation such as Afghanistan, it will take some time for the system to be tested, refined and subsequently accepted.
As for Afghani, she likes the system and is happy with it. "I am a modern woman and I want to have control over my money. Many employees have questions about it, but I like it because it gives me control over my salary, how I collect my money, and then how and when I withdraw it. It's a much more secure system and I know when I leave the office on payday, Mobile Money is much safer for me. And in the future, I think the system will expand and become more accepted across the country."
